about

We are The Washed Up Beulah Band, and we perform Jubilee style radio-quartet music from the 1930s and 1940s. This collection represents a snapshot of this unique singing style that bridged the gap between sacred and popular music. It inspired a generation of singers to breath new life into traditional African-American spirituals, hymns, and folk songs by tapping into the playfulness and pizazz of rag-time, blues, and jazz--making them appealing to religious and secular audiences alike. Though Jubilee singing became increasingly rare as it was replaced by the more worship-oriented Gospel singing tradition in the U.S., thankfully many recordings remain.

Drawing on the influence of such groups as The Golden Gate Gospel Quartet, the Soul Stirrers, The Selah Jubilee Singers and the Kansas City Gospel Singers (among many others), we try to sing this throw back sound with both humor and energy in hopes that it may inspire others to approach Jubilee singing as a tradition worthy of reviving.
